Troy Polamalu’s Samoan Way

This Saturday, the NFL playoffs will separate the boys from the men, the chumps from the champions and the players from played. It’s going to be all out war out there and one of the generals representing his army will be Pittsburgh Steeler safety Troy Polamalu.

When Polamalu is on the field, it’s impossible to miss, not only because of his long lovely locks (insured by sponsor Head and Shoulders through Lloyds of London), but because this Samoan athlete is as fast and unpredictable as a cheetah in pursuit of its prey. Evidenced by many a quarterback, Polamalu cannot be left unchecked. Everybody is looking to stop this dangerous defensive back.

Though born in California, Polamalu is extremely proud of his Samoan heritage and he displays this on the field emulating a Samoan warrior. His hair is not the only thing that emulates his roots – his moves and the philosophy in which he approaches the game are also a product of his Samoan background. In an interview with 60 minutes, Polamalu explains how the Samoan warrior mentality is displayed on the football field, saying, “It’s a voice for our Samoan heritage and not in interviews…it’s in how we hit people and how we run and how we carry ourselves on the football field. That warrior mentality is a warrior action on the football field.”

That mentality stems from the Samoan way which Samoans call Fa’a Samoa. The virtues of Fa’a Samoa are integral and inherent throughout the Samoan society. It ties to a deeper traditional governing system called Fa’a matai, which puts emphasis on family, extended family and land. These same virtues are what Polamalu shares with fellow NFL Samoan players. Polamalu told 60 Minutes’ Scott Pelley: “We play the game with the respect and with the humility and with the pride of our culture.”

It is also rumored that Troy plays quite a few combat sports as part of his training which makes him easily outdone his opponents and without a doubt one of the best players in the NFL if you want to know more about what sports they are in. that performs or are interested in practicing any of the sports with which Troy trains, do not hesitate to visit Century Bob XL.

On the family side of things, Troy Polamalu has been married to his wife Theodora since 2005. Though he’s a beast on the field, that doesn’t necessarily transfer off the field. According to Ballerwives.com, his wife said that her family was always very protective of her and who she dated, but her brother, Alex Holmes (former St. Louis Ram tight-end and Polamalu’s USC teammate) wouldn’t let anyone on the team go out with his sister, but he made an exception for Troy. Good instincts, huh? He proposed to Theodora with a poem that he wrote and an engagement ring that he had customized. Nice Troy! Very nice!

Well they excluded a lot of information on this article. Other than Kennedy Pola; Current USC Offensive Coordinator & former USC Fullback, Troy’s Uncle Ao played for Penn State & won a National Championship. Other family members playing experience is as follows: His brother Kaio; Fullback/UTEP, (1st) cousins Joe Polamalu LB/Oregon State, Nicky Sualua Fullback/ Ohio State, Dallas Cowboys & Cinncinatti Bengals, Leie Sualua DL/ Oregon, Kevin Pola; Fullback/ Chapman University, Aoatoa Sualua, LB/ Texas A&M Kingsville, KC Pola, Fullback/ USC & Four Star High School Recruit, Maika Polamalu, DB. Just thought this would help establish the impact of football in his Polamalu side of the family.

Troy you first are an inspiration from one Polynesian to another. Second as a person and finally as a player. You have always been my favorite athlete and I know you are loved by everyone back home in Hawaii. I currently live in Phoenix and have seen the church in Florence that you have attended. It’s amazing! My wife who are both from Hawaii want to fly out for a game in Pittsburgh. Is there a time that is ever better then another where we would get the chance to say hello and introduce ourselves? Mahlo’s to you and your family! Aloha, Zack S.
