It’s my pleasure to announce November’s Student of the Month is 12th grader Kelsey of Brookwood High School in Alabama. Shortly after starting her Senior year, Kelsey received the devastating news that what was originally thought to be a common knee injury, was in fact a form of bone cancer known as Osteosarcoma. Despite this terrible revelation, and all of the difficulties that come with it, Kelsey has kept her head held high and stayed strong for everyone that cares about her. Although she’s missing out on her senior year of high school, she hasn’t allowed her trying circumstances keep her from working hard to stay caught up with school in order to graduate in May, working from home and the hospital; all while wearing a smile. Kelsey is a senior this year. She is a cheerleader and just a few weeks into her senior year Kelsey had what she thought was an injury on her knee and wasn’t able to cheer. Just a short time later Kelsey found out that she didn’t have a cheer injury when she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that most often affects young athletes. Kelsey, her family, and our whole school and community were devastated!! Kelsey was so strong and went into the next few weeks with her head held high. She would have 10 weeks of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor, and then another 23 weeks of chemotherapy to kill all of the cancer cells. She is only two treatments short of being finished with her first 10 and will have surgery in early December. She has been through so much and never let her self get down. She has been so strong for her family and friends, even when she was dealing with things that were just awful, especially for a teenage girl. She is missing her senior year of high school, has lost all of her hair, and spends most of her time at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham but continues to smile through all of it. She is working so hard to stay caught up with her school work so that she can graduate with her classmates in May. She does all of her work at the hospital and at home with the help of her teachers. Every time that I see Kelsey she is still smiling and wants to hear all about school. She has been such an inspiration to all of our students at Brookwood High School. Our school and community have rallied around this special girl!! I can’t wait until May when all of this is behind her and she is walking across that stage on graduation night!!

Troy, you have been a blessing to the Steeler nation for a long time. We have been fans of yours for years. I have notice what a giving heart you have with all the programs you are involved in. Picking Kelsey was a great thing. She is a fighter and has kept a positive attitude through all of this. I nominated Micah Heckathorne 3 years ago, the first time you honored Students and he received one of your Jerseys. Micah was selected as your elementary Student…..it was the high light of this young boys life. To this day he tells everyone who will listen by pointing to his Steelers garb. He is a precious soul. Micah strives to be strong and learn. Micah is now 14 and a frail 60 lbs.. His health has had a bit of a down turn these last couple years, and I am cautiously optimistic. Mr Paulamolu, you are practically in our back yard, is there any way you could possibly come and meet your biggest fan? Micah’s life is hard health wise and physically, but he will never give up. He is my hero and my inspiration to do good. I would give anything to make this possible. I know it sounds so silly. You are a man, but yet your name, hair and profession has children looking up to you and admiring you. And for good reason, you are a good man. Micah may not understand “stardom”, popularity, or how to say words for everyone to understand, but by God this child can say “Paulamolu” and everyone knows what he has said. If there is any chance for this to happen, you will meet a child you will never forget. Thank You!
